A Comprehensive Guide to the UPSC Civil Services Examination Syllabus

The Union Public Service Commission(UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the most prestigious and competitive exams in India. It is one of the most important examination for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and various Group A and B central services.

This exam is conducted in three stages as Preliminary, Mains and Interview

Preliminary Exam

This is the screening test for the candidates to qualify for the Mains Examination. It contains two paper:

General Studies paper 1

In this paper the students knowledge about the current affairs and general awareness is checked.

  • Current events such as national and international importance
  • History of India and national movements  
  • Physical, Social and Economical Geography of India
  • Constitutions, political system, public policy and rights issues etc.
  • Economical and Social development and General Science

General Studies Paper 2 (CSAT)

In this paper the students analytical skills and decision making abilities are checked. It requires minimum of 33% to pass.

It contains comprehensions, interpersonal skills including communication skills, also the logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision making, general mental ability. 

Mains Exam

Candidates who clears the Prelims exam are eligible to appear for the UPSC Mains Examination. It contains nine descriptive papers from which two are qualifying papers and seven are counted for the merit.

Qualifying Papers

Paper A: Any Indian language mentioned in the list

Paper B: English

Essay Papers

In this paper candidates have to write two essays on topics of national and international significance.

General Studies Papers

General studies paper 1

In this paper Indian Heritage and Culture also the history of modern India and the national movement world history which contains Industrial Revolution world war cold war extra India and the world geography which contains physical social and economical Geography society and social issues in India based on the topic this general studies paper 1 test is will be conducted.

General Studies Paper 2

Syllabus of the general studies paper to will be the Indian constitution and governor also the public administration and governance and Social Justice which contains welfare schemes help education gender issues etc. also the International Relation of India India’s relation with neighboring countries, Global organization etc. 

General studies paper 3

In this paper the topics will be Science and Technology developments India economy and planning architect agriculture and food security, environmental issues also internal security and disaster management this will be the topics for the general studies paper 3.

General studies paper 4

Which contains ethics integrity and aptitude for the candidates and the topics will be 6 and human interface attitude and foundation values of Civics services emotional intelligence public civil service values and ethics in governance and also the case studies on physical decision making.

Optional subject paper 1 and 2

There will be the list of the subjects from which the candidates have to select the papers, in this optional subject there will be the two papers.

Final selection: personality test (interview)

After clearing the mains examination candidates appear for the personality test conducted by the UPSC Board in this interview they will assessor overall personality decision making skills leadership qualities and suitability for civil services.

This will be the overall process of selection of the UPSC candidates.
