NCTE plans to restart its One Year B.Ed and M.Ed certification courses 10 years after abolishing them. Review the necessary qualification standards alongside other specified requirements. The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has authorized the reintroduction of their B.Ed. and M.Ed. programs which were previously suspended ten years ago. A major transformation has been launched with the implementation of the B.Ed. programme which will return to existence after ten-year absence since its initial two-year format. The National Education Policy along with the UGC’s National Higher Education Qualifications Framework took responsibility for this initiative.
New B.Ed and M.Ed Programme Structure
Many prospective teachers will benefit because they will need shorter time to finish their program. The government stands to gain because implementing this policy would bring in additional educators who will normalize teaching ratios between public and private institutions. Working professionals can complete their one-year M.Ed. program on a full-time basis while having the alternative to finish it within two years. The new educational program is set to start during 2026-27 academic year.
The return of the one-year M.Ed. is needed because the longer duration prevented most candidates from pursuing this qualification. Many college seats remained empty since students refused to take admission slots.
Eligibility for 1 Year B.Ed Course
Students need either postgraduate studies or four years of undergraduate education before they can attend the one-year Bachelor of Education program. Individuals who earned their undergraduate degree in three years have the choice to enroll in the current B.Ed. program which spans two years.
Reinstating both the one-year Bachelor of Education and Master of Education programs will not lead to termination of existing two-year sessions. The Chairman of NCTE Pankaj Arora confirmed that working teachers and education administrators can pursue the two-year part-time M.Ed. program while the full-time one-year M.Ed. program remains for regular students.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 together with University Grants Commission (UGC) established the basis for bringing back these 1-year educational programs. UGC introduced the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework which enables completion of one-year master’s degrees at level 6.5.
Student achievement of educational level 6.5 will be possible when they finish ITEP or bachelor’s degree followed by one year of B.Ed training as per Arora.
