The Second Stage CBT is split into two sections: Part A and Part B. Part A contains four sections: Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering, and General Awareness on Current Affairs. The Mathematics and General Intelligence & Reasoning sections have the same topics as in the First Stage CBT.
Part B of the Paper contains questions about Engineering Drawing, Units, Measures, Work, Energy, Power, Heat, and Materials Science. The section of General Awareness contains questions from important events, railway developments, and government policies.
Part B is a trade-based test aimed at assessing technical knowledge of applicants in their specified trade, either Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, or Automobile Engineering. Part A is essential for merit list ranking, whereas Part B is a qualifying portion.

The CBAT is conducted to evaluate the cognitive and psychomotor skills of a candidate, such as concentration, memory, and decision-making. It is an untimed test without negative marking and candidates need to achieve the qualifying marks to advance to the last stage.
The last phase of the selection procedure is Document Verification and Medical Examination. Candidates who qualify for CBAT are invited for document verification, in which their educational documents, identity proofs, and category certificates are once again verified.
Subsequent to document verification, candidates need to undergo medical examination by railway medical authorities. The medical requirements for ALP are good eyesight, physical health, and the lack of any medical condition that could impair their functioning as a loco pilot.
The final choice of candidates is made based on their marks in the Second Stage CBT (Part A) and the CBAT. A merit list is drawn up, and trainee candidates are given training prior to being appointed as Assistant Loco Pilots in different railway zones.
The role of an ALP is to work in the operation of locomotives, to assist senior drivers, ensure safety protocols, and maintain rail operations effectively. Right preparation and a proper understanding of the syllabus and exam pattern are necessary to excel in the RRB ALP exam.
